Do I really need a Bridal Trial??

Posted on 6 February, 2019 at 3:00 Comments comments (0)

Wedding days are so precious and so important, you have been dreaming of your special day for months, if not years!!

Would you book your wedding venue without going and taking a look at it first??

Would you walk into a dress shop, show the assistant a picture of the dress you want and walk out with said dress having not tried it on??

It’s the same for your hair and/or make-up! I don’t know about you, but I knew exactly what dress I wanted for my wedding day. I didn’t want anything too big, I wanted something simple without layers and layers of fabric, no train, and I most certainly DID NOT want anything strapless!! I tried on the dress I was adamant I wanted for my wedding day…and it looked awful on me! What did I end up with?? Everything I thought wouldn’t suit me!!

I personally think it’s the same for hair and make-up, it’s not a case of ‘if you have this dress this hairstyle will work’, and we need to factor in so many details. How do you usually wear your hair? How do you usually wear your make-up? Do you have any insecurities you prefer to hide? Do you have any allergies to products? What is the colour theme for your wedding day? What is the back of your dress like? And so many more, but the most important factor…do you still look and feel like you?

A bride needs to be the best possible polished version of herself on her Wedding Day. You don’t want to look back at your pictures and ask yourself ‘what on earth was I thinking?’

I always strongly recommend a bride has a trial session. Bridesmaids and other members of the wedding party are completely your own decision, but in my eyes a Brides trial is vital! She also needs to know she feels comfortable within the company of her hair stylist/make-up artist.

I had one lady at a recent wedding fayre tell me she wouldn’t want a trial, she knows exactly what she wants; she told me it was just my way of making more money from her! My trial sessions cost less than on the Wedding Day, but if you factor in the timings, it actually should be more!! On a Wedding Day I allow around 2 hours for hair and make-up for the bride, a trial for both services, in most cases, takes around 3-4 hours! During this time we create your desired style, make any changes needed, and try things you wouldn’t usually consider, to see if they work for you.

Quite often a bride will contact me after her trial and ask for more or less height or volume in her hair, or a darker smoky eye, or a thicker set of lashes. This isn’t because she didn’t like what we done at the trial, it’s because she as looked at the pictures and decided she can pull off that little bit more to add to the ‘wow factor’. The majority of the time it’s the brides that want the ‘fresh no makeup’ look, but then realise that having a set of lashes can still look natural, while enhancing their eyes. The right lashes will not make you look fake! Or they tried lashes and didn’t feel comfortable, so decided they just want mascara on the day. There is no wrong or right way to have your hair and make-up for your wedding day; it’s all about what works for you.

These are changes you cannot make at the very last minute just before you walk down the aisle.

Your trial is for you, so you can feel confident in the lead up to your wedding day. At the same time, your trial is for me, so that I can help you overcome any worries or concerns, whether it is in the build up to your wedding day, or in the morning. My job is to keep you calm and chilled, while creating the perfect look for your special moment!

Keep your eyes peeled for my blog on ‘What to expect at your bridal trial’

Will it hold??

I had the pleasure of spending the morning with the beautiful Claire, on the 3rd November 2018, to style her hair before she walked down the aisle to say 'I do'

I met Claire for her trial on an extremely hot day in July, she wanted an elegant up-do and had plenty of pictures to show me so we knew exactly the look she wanted.

Claire mentioned that her hair does not hold well usually and when she was a bridesmaid recently everything fell out quite early in the day.  The look she wanted was quite a loose relaxed style so I advised her to see how it went throughout the day, as we may need to make a few alterations.

Unfortunately within a couple of hours everything had started to fall out.  Claire has thick super silky hair, its glossy and beautiful...but not ideal when it comes to styling.  So she came back for a second trial, I knew the alterations that had to be made, I just wanted to be sure (for my piece of mind and the brides) that it would actually hold!

The second trial was a success!  So what did I do differently??

  • The original style was very low on the neck, meaning there was not as much surface space to pin the chignon to.  By taking the design higher on the head this gave us more of a surface area to work with.  Especially as Claire was having a veil on her wedding day and wanted this below the bun
  • From the crown back wards, over the entire head, from root to 3 inches down I texturised the hair using a very small crimper (so 1980's but it really works), followed by a little back combing and spray this gave substance for the grips to cling to
  • As always, hair pins and grips are weaved into the hair for added staying power.  Hair pins are bent at the ends to create a hook to hold them in place
  • A loose style was not going to last on Claire for the day so it had to be slightly tighter and have structure
  • Finally...spray, spray and more spray.  Every section of hair was spritzed on the underside before securing place with grips and pins, and spraying again!!

Claire was warned not to stand near any naked flames...for fear of going up in smoke!!  (Not sure if my insurance covers me for that one!)

I left Claire to dress and head of to marry her prince, but I will be honest with you...I was worried it was not going to be enough...

...2 days later I saw the post on my Facebook page

"Sharon did my hair for my wedding and I couln't have asked for it to be more perfect.
I don't have the easiest of hair but this didn't faze her and it still looked perfect by the end of the day,
and was intact the next day too!
I would highly recommend Sharon xx"

Mission accomplished, panick over!  For hair that doesn't want to be styled, it lasted from Saturday morning to Sunday evening!

Many congratulations to Claire and Ben, I wish you a lifetime of love, laughter and happy memories!

Thank you for allowing me to play a part on your special day

Love and best wishes

My goal for 2019...Lets do this!

Posted on 29 January, 2019 at 2:40 Comments comments (0)

We all start the year making resolutions that we just can’t keep! I have done it so many times and failed, and then kicked myself for it!

So in 2018 I set myself a small goal…read at least one book a month. In 2018 I read 26 books! So this year my goal is to read at least one book a month (finished book number one in bed when the hubby went off to work this morning, if I am getting up at 5am to pack him a lunch that definitely deserves a little ‘me time’ lol) and to write at least 4 blog posts a month!

Well considering I only started yesterday I already have a little catching up to do!

My aim is to share real wedding experiences with you, sneak peeks from behind the scenes at model shoots and provide advice on planning your wedding, as well as hair and make-up hints and tips.

If you have any questions or topics you would like to see covered please do get in touch and Ask a Pro, I am always more than happy to help

I look forward to chatting with you all very soon

Love and best wishes

A bridal suite fit for a Princess!

Posted on 28 January, 2019 at 8:35 Comments comments (0)

My beautiful bride Gemma...what can I say?  From the moment she called to chat about make-up, to arriving at my studio for her trial with millionare shortbread, just in case we got peckish (damn you Slimming World lol) to a morning full of laugher and celebration, I didn't want this wedding to ever end!!

Gemma arrived at my door with gorgeous long hair and a beautiful beaming smile, she had a rough idea for make-up, and for the hair all she knew was she wanted it up and out the way with minimal fuss, but still with the wow factor.

Gemma was getting ready on her wedding day at West Heath School, Sevenoaks, in the Diana Suite.  A beautifully spacious room, dedicated to the late Princess, with plenty of natural light and large spaces to set up for hair and make-up...an MUA's dream!  It wasn't until half way through the bridal prep that I realised that Diana actually went to school there!!  It seriously is a bridal suite fit for a princess!!

So much beautiful hair, we applied a little 'twisty magic' to create an elegant style and finished with some beautiful hair pins from my cupboard of sparkles.  (visit my boutique, we used Jess in Gemma's hair)

With the worry over previous skin conditions Gemma chose to have the airbrush make-up for her wedding day.  Perfect for a natural, flawless, long lasting cover without feeling caked on the skin.

We emphasised her eyes using the Urban Decay Naked 3 pallet for a soft smoky eye, with a pair of lashes from Ardell to finish the look.

A glow on the cheeks and pop of colour on her lips using 'Finally Free' by Mac (discontinued shade)

Gemma was looking the way every bride should, radiant, timeless and elegant!

Thank you Gemma for allowing me to play a part on your special day, it was a pleasure spending time with you.

Congratulations to Ben and Gemma, I wish you a lifetime of love, laughter and beautiful memories

love and best wishes

Distress call...MUA down!!

Posted on 28 April, 2017 at 8:15 Comments comments (0)

Hair stylist and make-up artists in Kent are in abundance, it is a highly competitive industry to be in! However I don’t see fellow stylists as competition, yes we all have our own businesses, but we are still colleagues, we are a support network, were are there for each other!

I often get asked by brides ‘what happens if you are ill on my wedding day?’ or ‘what if something goes wrong and you can’t be there?’

While trying to usher my monsters out the door for school in January, I noticed an urgent plea on one of our forums by another make-up artist in desperate need of an additional pair of hands! I posted my number, told her to get in tough if I could help, and headed off on the school run.

Twenty minutes later, I was driving to Tesco, when a call came through…the make-up artist had been in a slight accident in the ice and was going to be late and needed someone to assist. The thought of a bride left stranded on her wedding day is every MUA’s worst nightmare, so I swung the car around at the next roundabout and headed home to collect my kit. With my head in work mode, but my appearance screaming ‘mummy duties’ (I confess, I did slap on a little foundation and concealer when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror heading out the door…thank god it wasn’t one of my unrealistic ‘yes I can get away with dry shampoo’ days!), I called my best friend and apologised or having to cancel our lunch plans and arrived at one of my favourite locations, Cooling Castle Barn, at 9.15am ready to report for duty.

This was the day I had the pleasure of meeting the very beautiful bride, Karen, her mum, and her four gorgeous bridesmaids, sisters Emma and Gemma, and her daughters, Lucy and Isabel. From the outset I was made to feel extremely welcome, after a quick chat with Karen about theme of the wedding and the styles they were after we set to work. While adding the finishing touches to the first hair style the MUA arrived and after preparing the brides hair she got to work on the make-up. Together we worked as a team (I didn’t mention that I had also never met the MUA before either!) to created stunning transformations for the whole bridal party.

The youngest bridesmaid was an extremely quiet little thing who spent most the morning munching her way through the beautiful spread provided by the venue, barely uttering two words…that was until it was her turn to sit in the chair!! I think Isabel and I covered every topic going, from favourite foods and colours, to what would you prefer as a pet… A fire breathing dragon? Or a dragon that sprayed water? This neither of us could agree on so decided given the choice we would have both dragons!!

This was my first wedding of 2017, and not one I was expecting either, but it was a fabulous start to the new year and I was extremely honoured to play a part in their special day! Many congratulations to Karen and Lee, the new Mr and Mrs Wagstaff. I wish you a life time of health and happiness, making beautiful memories with your little family.

A special thank you to Karen and Lee, and more importantly Steve of Duntons Photography for allowing me use the stunning images provided.

The show must go on!! ;-)

Unfortunately there are days in this industry you can not afford to be ill :( and friday was one of them!  After hardly any sleep I plastered on my face (which I dived into my kit for....I was in desperate need of the good stuff!) and headed off to meet the gorgeous Nikki for her wedding day!

On arriving at the B&B I discovered I was not the only one with the dreaded germs, with a poorly bride and a maid of honour full of cold!  It SNOT FUNNY!! ;)  On a serious not I do hope the mother of the groom has managed to escape the germs, if she is suffering now I am truely sorry xxx

So this was my first attempt at a little slide show for the bridal preparations.  Please excuse the flash back in some of the pictures, one of my new goals for the year is to get to grips with my camera!!  A massive thank you to the amazing Sue Farnsworth of Sues Special Days Photography for allowing me to use some of her pictures.  A very talented lady, its always an absolute pleasure working with her.

Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Gray - 12th February 2016

All my love

Bridal Hair and Make-up: Do's and Don'ts

Posted on 20 January, 2015 at 9:15 Comments comments (0)

Hello ladies, I have never tried this whole 'blog' thing before!  But I guess there is a first time for everything!! Deciding what to write my first entry about was no contest.  Sadly I have worked recently with brides that have had bad experiences with therapists working within the wedding industry and this has unfortunately cost the brides more money and added to their pre-wedding stress.

To try and help the current sitation I have compiled a 'check list' to help brides when it comes to booking their hair and make-up stylist.  So please take the time to have a read through and any comments are more than welcome!

  • DO, first and for most and I can't stress this one enough ladies, make sure that the person you are hiring is fully qualified and insured.  A genuine stylist will be more than happy to show their qualifications or insurance certificates if asked.
  • DON'T always do for the cheapest option and this may end up costing you more in the long run.  I am not saying book the most expensive either!  As I was always told with quotes for DIY etc... 'get several quotes and opt for the middle man'.  Just take note that the stylists prices also refelect their experience and the products they use.
  • DO book a trial!  You wouldn't buy your wedding dress without trying it on first!  Most stylists offer trials at a discounted rate, and this gives you a chance to get to know them.  You need to be able to talk to your stylist and feel comfortable with them as they will play a part in your special day!
  • DON'T pay a deposit to secure the date until you have had a trial and are happy with the service they provide.  If you do pay a deposit prior to the trial be sure to check its refundable as you don't want to be out of pocket!
  • DO check out pictures of their previous work either on-line or in a portfolio.  Be sure to look out for pictures of themselves working on the brides as unfortunately some people do use pictures off the internet of brides they have not worked with.
  • DO feel free to ask what brands of make-up etc they use!!  Most stylists use a variety of different brands and will work with products they believe in.  I personally won't use a product on a bride unless I have tried and tested it on myself first :-) and my kit ranges from Rimmel and Maxfactor to Urban Decay, Benefit, Clinque etc.  Also you don't want to pay a fortune for a make-up artist that only uses products bought from a high street store!
  • DON'T be shy to tell a stylist you don't like something or want to change the look at all.  Remember, its your day and you need to feel comfortable.  You are paying us to make to you feel confident and stunning!
  • DO get the therapist to take some pictures of the style you have created together so that you may look back on it if needed.  Also it helps to check the make-up you have chosen looks just as amazing on camera as it does in the flesh.
  • DON'T let a stylist talk you in to having any services you don't want, you can say no at anytime.  Let them recommend other treatments, by all means as they may provide something you want, but you are not obliged to say yes!
  • DO NOT have a facial just before your wedding as you are extremely likely to break out in spots, especially if you are not used to it!  Have a facial around 2-4 weeks before the wedding, or book in for a course over a few months leading up to your wedding, but NEVER within the last 2 weeks!!
I hope this has helped and if I think of anything else I'll add it to the list ;-)

By all means, feel free to contact me with any questions, I am always happy to help!

Take care and I'll speak to you soon,

All my love

Sharon xx
